Key Insights & Trends

So, what’s behind this upward trend? There are a few big reasons why more Indian universities are breaking into the QS World University Rankings each year. First, there’s been a stronger focus on quality research — universities are publishing more high-impact papers and collaborating with global partners.

Second, government initiatives like the Institutes of Eminence, Study in India, and the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 are pushing institutions to aim higher and adopt global best practices.

Third, many universities are improving their international outlook by hiring diverse faculty, encouraging student exchanges, and building partnerships with top institutions abroad.

And finally, there’s a mindset shift: Indian universities are realizing that competing globally isn’t just about rankings — it’s about giving students a world-class education that’s recognized and respected anywhere.

Government and Institutional Initiatives

🏅 Institutes of Eminence (IoE) Scheme

Launched in 2017, this flagship program designates select universities as “Institutes of Eminence,” offering them unprecedented financial autonomy and research funding. According to QS Insights, six of India’s top 10 research-intensive universities are IoEs, contributing massively to improved rankings with a 35% average publication growth since 2017

📘 National Education Policy (NEP) 2020

NEP 2020 emphasized research, interdisciplinary learning, and a global outlook. QS itself credits NEP’s framework—featuring interdisciplinarity, flexible curricula, and international collaboration—as a core driver of India’s rise in the rankings

Globalization & International Partnerships

In line with NEP guidelines and new legislation, Indian universities are partnering with institutions abroad—launching dual degrees, joint research centers, and even branch campuses—to boost international exposure and ranking metrics

✅ 9. Conclusion

PM Modi’s remarks, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan highlighted the remarkable growth in India’s global academic footprint. From just 11 Indian universities in the QS rankings in 2014, the number has surged to 54 in 2026, an increase of nearly 390 per cent over the last decade.

“This five-fold jump is a testament to the transformative educational reforms ushered in by the Narendra Modi government in the last ten years,” said Pradhan, attributing the rise to major policy shifts such as the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
